Meet King

King Sophia is a multidisciplinary storyteller and world-builder.

Classically trained with a degree from the Frost School of Music - University of Miami, King Sophia's cellistic and compositional skills are their main processors for the world around them. They’re also an electric guitarist, vocalist, conductor, educator, curator, producer, disc jockey and poet.

As a creator with roots in many genres from blues to funk to avant-garde, King Sophia is known for their versatility expressed through multidisciplinary explorations of strategic resistance and radical joy.

In addition to solo projects and their Neo-soul/Hardbop fusion ensemble, King Sophia and the Unbroken Circle, they perform, arrange, and compose in groups such as Autophysiopsychic Millenium, White Flowers, Ataraxia, and Sovereign Beat Unit.

King has been an artist in residence at major institutions such as Vanderbilt University, University of Michigan, Ragdale and Cranbrook. They also have ongoing performance residencies at AndThenYou in Hamilton, Ontario, CA and the Hannan Center in Detroit, MI, USA. For 2+ years they've arranged for and led The King’s Trio in my lecture and performance series, Listening B(l)ack, which showcases historically under-discussed Black composers and compositions. Over the past 3 years, they have been a lead organizer for the Detroit revitalization of the pagan holiday, Imbolc, and led an annual salon and jam session called the Imbolc Community Creation Session.

King is especially known for their live arranging and live composing — what others call ‘improvisation.’ Each new creation is grounded in their identities of Black Indigenous Queerness and a desire to preserve, showcase, and build upon non-hegemonic music history. Using these core cultural threads as a foundation for their practices, King Sophia explores art and intention through a holistic lens to concoct sonic experiences that motivate, illuminate, alleviate, and empower.
